Description
Artefill (Artecoll ) Filler
Artefill injections have been used throughout Europe and Canada for more than a decade under the name Artecoll to reduce the appearance of nasolabial folds (the deep lines that run from side of the nose to the corner of the mouth). Artefill (originally submitted as Artecoll) is FDA approved for the treatment of nasolabial lines and folds.
What is Artefill (Artecoll)?
Artefill is a new breed of dermal filler that offers longer lasting results than other cosmetic filler injections.
Artefill is made of polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) microspheres (miniature beads) that are suspended in bovine collagen. PMMA has been used previously in some medical implants.
When an Artefill injection is given, the solution not only acts as a dermal filler, but its microspheres also stimulate the body to produce its own collagen. As the injected collagen slowly degrades naturally, the newly produced collagen replaces it. This gives Artefill long-lasting, almost permanent results.
How is Artefill Used?
Artefill (or Artecoll) injections are administered by the doctor directly into the desired treatment area – currently nasolabial folds are the only facial area for which Artefill is seeking FDA approval. Unlike fillers such as collagen, Artefill does not need to be over injected to correct wrinkles. Because of the filler’s composition, the results of an Artefill injection will be seen immediately and will not begin to fade too quickly.
How is Artefill Different from Other Fillers?
The greatest difference between Artefill (Artecoll) and other dermal fillers is durability of results. Studies have shown that patients who received an Artefill injection showed an improvement in the nasolabial folds five years after treatment. Collagen or fat injections, however, typically last only a few months since the enzymes of the injections begin to break down soon after treatment. Other fillers, like RADIESSE, have small particles similar to Artefill®. These fillers can last up to two years, well short of the longer-lasting results of Artefill.
Another significant difference between Artefill and other dermal fillers is that the composition of Artefill (Artecoll) prohibits safe use of the product on thinner skin. Unlike many other fillers, Artefill injections should not be used to correct crow’s feet or the eyelids.
