In this workshop, LUX Artist-in-Residence Jewelya Coffey will teach the basics of creating trace monotypes, a process she uses regularly to begin a drawing. A trace monotype is a printmaking process that involves drawing on paper laid over an inked plate. The pressure of the pencil transfers ink to the paper, creating a unique print. These specific monotypes will be used with oil paint, which makes it a print, painting, and drawing all in one.
Painting with both watercolor and gouache allows artists to combine the transparency and layering capabilities of watercolor with the opaque coverage of gouache, creating richer, more detailed paintings by utilizing each medium's strengths. Typically, watercolor is used for washes and backgrounds while gouache is applied for sharp details and highlights. In this class, participants will experiment with different techniques using watercolor and gouache and will leave with a completed painting. All materials are provided. This class is for Adults 16+.
